History

Delia Tetreault (1865 – 1941), a nun of the Holy Mother Immaculate Mission, was born in Quebec, Canada. In 1909, Delia and five other nuns were sent to Guangdong province, China and were engaged in preaching the Gospel and working in an orphanage. Striving against adversities for more than a decade, she laid the foundation for the Church to preach the Gospel in the Far East.

In 1965, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Edmonds, the American Founders of Delia Memorial School in Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, adopted the name of Sister Delia Tetreault as the name of School in order to commemorate her dedication to the missionary work in China. Five years later, another school was established in Hillwood Road as a branch (“Hillwood Road School”). In 1977, Mr. Cheng Kar-chun, Henry became a school supervisor and the development of school has been growing more rapidly. Until now, the Group has 5 “Direct Subsidy Scheme Secondary Schools” which are fully subsidized by the government. Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) is one of them.

Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) is the former Hillwood Road School established in 1970. In 1980, it was relocated to the present premises at Kwun Tung, Hip Wo Street and was formally renamed as Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) – “Delia Hip Wo”.

Since its establishment, Delia Hip Wo has been providing educational services to local ethnic groups. In recent years, in order to meet the needs of the society, it has admitted a lot of students from the newly immigrated families from the mainland. In addition, it has begun providing a series of educational support services to the mainland immigrants. At present, Delia Hip Wo may be considered an international school of sorts particularly for its response to students from different ethnic groups and from the newly immigrated families from the mainland.
